Fighting Childhood Obesity
Obesity is considered to be a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased healthy problems. Some common healthy problems are various diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, osteoarthritis, asthma, etc. We would not want our child to be living with these diseases which could hinder their life. We want them to live their life to the extent. And we want them to be HEALTHY! And for us to do that, there is a program in which the First Lady, Michelle Obama, has created, in which we could follow. Her program is called Let's Move! and there are simple steps that we could follow to achieve our goal, of fighting childhood obesity.
Let's Move! is an initiative, launched by the First Lady, which is dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation. It is so that children who are born today will grow up healthier and will be able to pursue their dreams. People called it an ambitious goal, but with your help, we can do it.
- The First Step is: TO EAT HEALTHY
Studies shows that many children take in at least half of their daily calories at school. And for many of those children, food served at school may be the only food they regularly eat.
Principles, teacher, school nutrition workers and parents can help make schools a healthy environment for the students by providing quality food and teaching children the importance of nutrition and embracing a healthy active lifestyle.
In Let's Move!, Michelle Obama, has launched Chefs Move to Schools, in which the program matches schools with a local chef, who is able to incorporate new techniques and healthy recipes into the schools meals. And those chefs are going to show kids that eating right is delicious and fun.
- The Second Step is: TO GET ACTIVE
It is said that by just going out and doing physical activity 60 minutes a day, is a way to get active. Many schools are now incorporating programs in which the students are given at least 60 minutes a day to be active, whether it be physical education programs or activities that go on before, during or after school, it is a program which helps the students to be healthy and active.
In Let's Move!, there are programs offered which focuses on healthy eating and active lifestyles. The programs are: the President's Physical Fitness Challenge, the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award, and the HealthierUS School Challenge.
- The Third Step is: TO TAKE ACTION
The take actions step has 5 simple steps to get the school to take action.
1. Create a School Health Advisory Council.
2. Join the HealthierUS Schools Challenge.
3. Set a Good Example. Make your school a healthy work place.
4. Incorporate nutrition education and physical education into the school day.
5. Plant a school garden.
All these steps are shown to help and improve the school's environment. This way the schools will learn to eat healthy, be active, and to take action, by taking matters into their own hands.
- The Fourth and Final Step is: TO JOIN Let's Move!
