Healthy Living
We've all heard about having a balanced diet and exercising daily, but do we really know how to go about doing this? Here, we are going to show you how to get started.
As guardians of our children, we are obligated to teach them to have a healthy lifestyle that will be beneficial to them in their adult lives.
How to get started:
1. Get rid of the processed foods. You can substitute low-fat or nonfat dairy products for whole milk products, lean cuts of meat instead of meat that's covered with fat, and whole grain breads and cereals instead of sugar-filled snacks. As we do this, however, we have to keep in mind to think of ways to entice our children of these new produce that they could possibly reject. We have to be creative to get our children to eat these healthy foods.
2. Get the whole family involved. Bring the kids to the grocery store so we can teach our children what's good for them and what's not, in order for them to understand why these changes are taking place. Provide your opinions as to whether you think what they choose to eat is healthy for them or not, but do not dictate what they eat. Educating kids about food will prove to be very worthwhile as they grow up and make their own choices.
3. Eat meals together as often as possible. Eating meals together will not only involve everyone but it will also create a pleasant memory for the children, associating food with an "unwinding time" with the family. This would also be a good opportunity to remind our kids to eat slowly - to chew their food thoroughly - because it will be easier for the food to be digested this way.
4. Look at portion. We must make sure that the portion of our meals is just right for our body. We don't want to put too much in our body, and we don't want to starve ourselves either. We can prevent obesity by watching how much we eat, and how frequent we eat. We can have a "frequent feeding diet" where we eat a little portion of food every two hours, having at least five meals a day.
5. Exercise. Having a healthy lifestyle not only consists of eating healthy, but it also includes exercising regularly. Walking everyday for at least an hour can do wonders for our health like reducing the risk of hypertension. Exercising also keeps our weight in check, improves our mood, boosts our energy, and it promotes better sleep. All in all, exercise helps us fight diseases and helps with our self-esteem while having fun. (We can even do this with the whole family!)
